According To The variety Indian filmmaker Sudipto Sen, known for his controversial 2023 box office hit “The Kerala Story,” has unveiled an ambitious slate of projects under his new banner Sipping Tea Cinemas, as his producer debut “Charak – Fair of Faith” heads to the Cannes Film Market.

The film showed at the European Film Market in Berlin earlier this year. “Charak” delves into the chilling intersection of faith and ritualistic practices, specifically exploring the darkly intense Charak Puja observed in parts of the Bengal region.

“‘Charak’ is more than just a film; it’s a sobering examination of the extreme things people will do for religious reasons,” Sen said in a statement. “Through this story, we are forced to confront deeply troubling rituals that are frequently accepted without question. My goal was to shine a light on customs that persist in certain spheres of society, frequently concealed behind the guise of devotion

Positioned in the emerging “folklore horror” genre, the film blends suspense with social commentary, featuring storylines about child abduction and exploring themes of non-biological motherhood, friendship, childhood, and parenthood.

Sipping Tea Cinemas’ upcoming slate includes a sequel to the 2001 classic “Chandni Bar”; “Basera,” a political thriller set against the backdrop of Maoist-inspired Naxalist insurgency; “The Eighth Note,” a biopic on legendary Carnatic singer M.S. Subbulakshmi; and “People’s President,” focusing on India’s current President Draupadi Murmu.

The company is also developing two series: “17 Days,” based on the real-life incident of 41 workers trapped in the collapsed Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand, and “Kashmir,” a multi-season series exploring the complexities of the war-torn region against the backdrop of a love story.

Sen’s ISIS recruitment tale “The Kerala Story” was in the eye of a storm in India when in released in 2023. It divided the country’s political classes, with some banning the film and others encouraging it. It emerged as a major box office success, grossing some $35 million
